For more than 30 years, Louise Tanguay has been photographing the world around her with the keen eye of an artist. She plays with colour and light, combining reflections, shapes and shadows to throw lifelines from image to feeling. She seizes the passing moment; she arrests fleeting moods to make us partners in her view of planet earth. From sweeping vistas to hugely magnified close-ups, her approach to nature startles and enchants. Her work sometimes evokes the gossamer lightness of watercolour, sometimes the stark precision of engraving. The impact of her images awakens secret cords that lie dormant in each of us.
She has published three important works. In Les Éditions de l'Homme’s coffee-table book collection, she has written the texts, done the layout and produced the photographs of NATURA, a book which casts a poetic and inspiring eye on nature. The second volume of this collection, FLORA, is completely dedicated to plants and flowers. NATURA and FLORA are also published in France by Rustica Éditions and should soon be available on the English-Canadian and American markets. The Reford Gardens and Treasures of Reford Gardens, books illustrated with Louise's photographs, were published by Les Éditions de l'Homme and made the best-seller lists of the summers of 2004 and 2005.
She also produced the photographs and did the layout for a series of Guides to the Gardens of Quebec, published in both English and French. The collection currently groups six volumes, all beautifully illustrated, which are great ambassadors for the impressive public gardens of the province.
Louise Tanguay has won many awards for her work. Her photographs have been published in newspapers and magazines such as La Presse, The Globe and Mail, The National Post, L'actualité, Equinox, Canadian Geographic and Winds, Japan Air Lines' in-flight magazine. She has authored many articles on photography in Photo Sélection and Photo Life. Her slideshows and lectures have travelled extensively, and her photography workshops, offered in the Outaouais, have drawn participants from the four corners of Ontario, Quebec and France. Her extensive teaching experience has led her to Université Laval's École internationale d’été de Percé where she teaches intensive digital photography courses during the summer. Her work has also been exhibited in galleries in both provinces. She has recently won a prestigious award for her work, the Grand prix d’excellence de la Fondation des arts, des lettres et de la culture de l’Outaouais.
Originally from Hearst, in northern Ontario, she now resides and works in the Ottawa area.
